this includes an indiana toddler that was found alive in a field on saturday. nbc's jay gray reports. >> reporter: this morning across tornado alley, battered communities are preparing for anything but a normal monday. the message seems a bit obvious. like so much here, henryville high school has been torn apart. there are, though, other signs of survival. some life brings the steady rhythm of crews looking to pull away and pile up what they can. others sifting through the rubble by hand to find anything they might be able to save. evidence of their lives before the storm. >> she's probably 70. and she lost everything except what we can pull out. >> reporter: more than three dozen families already know they won't find any help or hope in this debris. they lost loved ones in the storm. one of those, 15-month-old angel babcock. first responders found her fighting for her life in this field. her mom, dad, brothers, already dead. yesterday, angel passed away after being pulled from life support. her grandfather showed his emotions. >> my pastor is going in with me.

it's the scene across southern indiana. it's heartbreaking. there are good people who have come to help. i want to bring in tony mcken nan. there's so many organizations around that have come in, complete strangers, to help. you are a christian organization, but it's all about help. what's the greatest need now? >> the greatest need now is obviously shelter. we can't obviously give that. we give hot meals, drink, we just want to do what we can. just to lift the spirt of these people. the devastation is obvious. >> reporter: you helped them pick through the pieces as best you can. >> people were looking for momentos. just personal items. they want to find them and keep them. it's memories. we help in any way we can. >> reporter: thank you for the work you do. and we should say there's so many organizations like that. the red cross is here. the national guard is here. obviously, the state patrol is here in a strong show of force. but many organizations. some are religiously-affiliated. many are not. all here to do their best. this may be one of

i want to show you pictures out of henryville, indiana. this was hit by the ef-4. it snowed last night and now have about 2 inches of snow on the ground in this area. just incredible that now they have to deal with this. and that snow will be gone. but just surreal. i don't know if i remember seeing snow in areas just hit by a tornado. let's show you a recap from the big tornado outbreak. one of the biggest ever in march history. 79 tornadoes is how many estimated by dr. greg forbes. 43 of those are confirmed tornadoes, and we're going to get more confirmations over the next day or two. that area of snow is moving through west virginia. it's going to move through areas of virginia. richmond is going to see snow this morning before turning the rain showers this afternoon. it's a cold day, very much like winter in areas of the northeast. the windchill's very bad up through new england and the great lakes. the warm weather's continuing to the middle of the country and that'll make it to the east coast. and i'm happy to report, no tornado outbreaks are likely this week
